The main idea of my photographs in Reflecting Behind The Surface is to re-create images using reflecting mirrors and to reveal emotional realities that lie beneath or behind the scene. Generally, the images captured in the mirror are the most significant and are designed to represent the internal world of dreams, desires, and memories. My personal experiences and perspectives are a key aspect of this work. These experiences are presented in a sequential narrative drawn from blurred memories and experiences that have left deep impressions on me. There is, therefore, a strong autobiographical element that draws on personal identity. For example, my work captures my children’s characters and transfers my human interactions and experiences with them into a visual, emotional language. My youngest son (almost 1-year old) was born hearing impaired and this has led me to a heightened awareness of the meaning of the senses such as touching, seeing, hearing, and smelling. The image within the frame of the mirror represent a kind of diary or journal of dreams and personal desires that often go unspoken. I am interested in the traditional textures because they allow me to express the realm of subconscious emotion. I am interested in the combination of historical texture and contemporary digital techniques using Photoshop. I have also begun to explore additional techniques, such as etching, to create interesting patterns through scratching the printing surface. |
